Carbondale, Ill. - Southern Illinois (29-14, 15-6) takes to the road for its final three-game series of the regular season this weekend when it plays at Wichita State (19-30, 11-10). The Salukis will begin the series with a single game at 6 p.m., on Friday before concluding with a noon doubleheader on Saturday.
Heading into its final weekend of league play, SIU will be looking for both a sweep of Wichita State and an Evansville loss. The Salukis, who currently stand tied for second with Evansville, need to win out this weekend and hope that the Purple Aces lose in order to clinch the second seed to the MVC Tournament (May 9-11).
If both teams win out, however, the second seed will go to Evansville who posted a 2-1 series win over SIU earlier in the year.
Winning its last 10-of-12 games, the sizzling Salukis are led by freshman right-hander Amy Harre who has been on fire as of late. Named MVC Pitcher of the Week for the third straight week and fifth time this season, Harre has posted seven consecutive complete game wins. Sporting a record of 17-8 on the year, she is recently coming off a one-hitter at Bradley (4/28), which saw her strike out 10 batters.
Meanwhile, Wichita State is back on the winning track after having lost eight of its last 11 games. Coming off a two-game sweep of Drake (4/28), the fifth-place Shockers are led by junior shortstop Tina Lewis who is batting .301 with 23 runs and 11 RBI.
SIU has won eight of its last 11 meetings against Wichita State as the overall series stands at 29-14 in favor of the Salukis. Last season, the Dawgs posted a three-game sweep of the Shockers in Carbondale.
