Women's Track Places 5th At MVC Outdoor Championships

CEDAR FALLS, Ia. - On the strength of six individual titles, the Southern Illinois University track and field team finished the 2002 season Saturday at the Missouri Valley Outdoor Championships with the women placing fifth and the men placing sixth in the team standings.
Korto Dunbar, Latrice Gray and Danielle Lawary won titles for the Saluki women, while Kellen Allen, Jeff Young and Adam Judge won events for the men. The SIU women finished with 79 points, placing one spot ahead of their predicted sixth-place position. The SIU men totalled 60 points, finishing one spot behind their predicted fifth-place position.
Dunbar won the 100-meter hurdles with a career-best time of 14.03 seconds, and Lawary had a career-best toss of 49 feet, 6 3/4 inches to take the shot put. Gray took her fourth straight MVC high jump title with a outdoor season-best jump of 5 feet, 8 3/4 inches.
Lawary's new personal-best mark is an NCAA provisional qualifying distance and it places her No. 4 on the all-time SIU outdoor best list, one spot behind Saluki head coach Connie Price-Smith (49-11 1/2). Dunbar's new personal-best places her in a tie for fourth on the SIU best list with Traci Davis.
Judge won the hammer throw on Friday in impressive fashion (see previous release), while Young easily won the 110-meter hurdles with a time of 13.96 seconds and Allen won his first MVC title by tying his SIU career-best jump at 6 feet, 10 3/4 inches.
Other top showings by the Saluki men included third-place showings by Jaanus Uudmae in the triple jump (50-11 1/2), Marvin Primo in the 200-meter dash (21.15), and Kevin Mills in the 100m dash (10.67).
The women had second-place showings from Kelsey Toussaint (400m, 55.21) and Noa Beitler (1,500m, 4:34.59) and a third-place finishes from Mariann Ahuna in the triple jump (41-3 3/4) and Marian Appiah-Kubi in the 400m (55.26). All top-three finishes were good enough to earn all-conference honors.
Katy Ritten added a fourth-place throw in the shot put (43-10 3/4), and Venisha Williams placed fifth in the hammer throw with a toss of 151 feet, 10 inches.
