CARBONDALE, Ill. - The Southern Illinois University football team wrapped up its last day of two-a-day practices Saturday with a morning scrimmage at McAndrew Stadium.
The scrimmage lasted approximately two hours and covered every game situation with the exception of the two-minute drill.
"The defense has won most of the wars during two-a-days," head coach Jerry Kill said afterward. "But the offense was sharp today, and I feel good about that."
The first team offense was guided by redshirt freshman quarterback Stanley Bryant, who displayed tremendous speed in the open field, including one long touchdown run.
RB Tom Koutsos, the school's career rushing leader, looked in top form as he broke several long runs and also scored a touchdown in the goalline offense.
In addition to Bryant and Koutsos, the rest of the first team offense included WRs Courtney Abbott and Nick Wafford, TE Chris Kupec, LT Brian Akins, LG Wesley Proctor, C Mike Fritzler, RG Matt Anderson, RT Brice Schafer and FB Curtis Jones.
Kill said he has not decided on a starting quarterback for the opener yet. True freshman Joel Sambursky, who has missed part of camp with injury, and senior Kevin Kobe are still in the running.
"The quarterbacks have been getting better each day," Kill said. "They have good focus, and there's good competition there."
The first team defense featured DEs Lionel Williams and Chris Sutherlin, DTs Brandon Walker and Matt Scheffler, LBs Eric Egan and Jeff Jones, CBs Derrick Corker and Steron Davidson, and safeties Justin George, Cortez McBerry and Alexis Moreland.
Kill said the coaching staff will examine the film from today's scrimmage and continue to make adjustments.
"We've got some tough decisions to make," he said. "We might have to move some people around to get the best 22 players on the field. We have some crucial decisions to make tonight and tomorrow."
The team will not practice Sunday or Monday and will begin a normal practice schedule when schools starts on Tuesday.
"We're dead-dog tired," Kill said. "It's been 15 straight days of two-a-days, and we're all dragging. The players need a few days off to get their legs back."
