Murfreesboro, Tenn. - Sophomore Lukasz Soswa and Senior Gian Carlo Remigio both won first round matches to lead the men's tennis team at the Middle Tennessee Classic. The Salukis struggled on the first day as Soswa and Remigio were the only SIU players to win a first round match.
After the action was moved indoors due to poor weather, Soswa pulled out a victory over Jacksonville State's Rodney Rapson in flight A2 singles, 3-6, 7-6(7-4), 10-8. Remigio advanced to the second round in flight B singles after Austin Peay's Ben Griffy withdrew. After losing in the flight A1 singles, Peter Bong was able to advance into the second round of the flight 1A consolation bracket when his opponent Joe Schmulian (U. of Memphis) withdrew.
Further singles play will continue tomorrow. Teams will also begin doubles action.
