CHAMPAIGN, Ill. - The women's cross country team showed that its not intimidated by big name schools with a third-place finish Saturday at the Illini Challenge. SIU only came up short against Illinois and Miami (Ohio) University.
Indiana State's Jessica Crowder finished second (17:31) overall in the five-kilometer race, but it was not enough as the Salukis (87) continued a successful season, defeating Indiana State (114) for the second time in three weeks.
"I am disappointed because Southern Illinois has taken away some of our momentum for the Missouri Valley Conference meet in a couple of weeks," ISU women's cross country coach John Gartland said. "After beating them last week, they came back and beat us by quite a bit today."
Senior Noa Beitler led the SIU charge with an 11th place finish in 18:28, a season best for the Israeli native. Freshman Brittani Christensen finished right on Beitler's heels with a time of 18:31, while fellow freshman Sarah Rinker (15th) was in early season form with a time of 18:39.
Freshmen Cherylynn Schilling (22nd) and Lindsay Wagner (27th) finished in 18:51 and 18:58, respectively, while fellow freshman Katie Birn was 35th in 19:09 to round out the top six.
SIU will return to action in two weeks on Nov. 1 at the MVC Championships held in Des Moines, Iowa. Results can be found at www.SIUSalukis.com.
