CARBONDALE, Ill. - Sophomore Felix Anderson and senior Korto Dunbar were named as the Missouri Valley Conference male and female track athletes-of-the-week for their success at the annual Saluki Fast Start Invitational last weekend, the league office announced Tuesday.
Anderson, a sophomore from Harvey, Ill., finished first in the 200-meter dash at the Fast Start Invite with a time of 21.24. He broke the Southern Illinois all-time indoor record with his time, eclipsing the old mark of 21.32 set by Orlando McKee in 1999. The new record is a personal and career best time for the sprinter and tops the provisional qualifying standard for the NCAA Indoor Track and Field Championships.
Dunbar, a senior from Greenbelt, Md., finished with Valley best times in both the 55-meter dash and 55-meter hurdles at the Fast Start Invite. With a time of 7.17, she placed third in the 55-meter dash while in the hurdles, she was just .12 seconds off her record-setting time from last season while posting a time of 8.05. Dunbar finished second in the hurdles while also claiming second in the 200 meters with a time of 25.73.
This is the first athlete-of-the-week honor for both Anderson and Dunbar this season. Melissa Ullenbruch and Jason Carruthers of Indiana State were honored as the male and female field athletes-of-the-week by the MVC.
SIU will return to action Jan. 15-16 as it hosts the Saluki Booster Invitational, which will be held at the SIU Student Rec. Center. Results can be found at www.SIUSalukis.com.
