Softball Defeats Winthrop 4-1 At Bama Bash

Tuscaloosa, Ala. - Southern Illinois University improved to 6-0 with a 4-1 win over Winthrop (0-1) in game two of the Bama Bash on Friday. Seniors Katie Kloess and Renee Mueller combined to throw a three-hitter and allowed one run in the win.
"Katie (Kloess) battled hard and Renee (Mueller) came in the fourth inning and pitched well to secure the win. It's nice to start 6-0 but I'm happier that we played everyone and are showing our versatility," coach Kerri Blaylock said.
"They're a scrappy team that puts the ball in play but we battled them. I'm not happy that we left 11 runners on base including the bases left loaded once. Our intensity dropped after the Western Kentucky game but I'm happy we won the game."
SIU took a 1-0 lead in the first inning after Lindsey Bonnell singled, stole second and scored on Katie Jordan's RBI single. The Salukis added three runs in the third inning when Katie Louis' sacrifice fly scored Bonnell and Jenny Doehring and Kelly Creek added RBI singles, scoring Kendra Moore and Jordan respectively.
Lindsey Bonnell (3-for-4, 2 runs) led the SIU offense. Jordan (2-for-3, RBI), Creek (2-for-4, RBI), Louis (1-for-2, RBI) and Doehring (1-for-4, RBI) were strong at the plate for SIU.
SIU faces host #22 Alabama at 1:30 p.m. at the Alabama Softball Complex on Saturday at the Bama Bash in Tuscaloosa, Alabama. Live stats can be seen at www.rolltide.com of all SIU games.
