Carbondale, Ill. - The men's tennis team was stunned by the University of Evansville Saturday morning when its first win of the season slipped away. Evansville pulled out the extremely tight match with a 4-3 win over SIU, giving the Purple Aces their first conference win of the spring season.
Derek Boland and Dusten Wessel solidified the doubles point for Evansville by defeating SIU's Lukasz Soswa and Bojan Ilievski, 8-6, in a long, frustrating matchup at the No. 3 spot. The match continued its grueling pace during singles play as both teams won three of the six matches. Seniors Alon Savidor and Gian Carlo Remigio, and freshman Tomas Gonzalez all pulled out singles wins.
"We're obviously disappointed, since this match was so close," said SIU head coach Missy Jeffrey. "We know that we have a good team, so we'll put this match behind us and look forward to our next matches, especially our next conference match against Drake."
One bright spot for the Salukis was watching Savidor grab his 44th career singles win. He is now just four wins shy of being nineteenth on SIU's all-time career wins list.
The long day for the Salukis got better as they recovered from the earlier loss to defeat Vincennes University, 6-1, in the second match of the double header. SIU was able to get the doubles point by winning at the Nos. 2 and 3 positions. The team also won 5 of 6 singles matches to get the victory, bringing their season record to 1-2.
SIU will return to action on March 27 when it faces Murray State. Results of each match can be found on the team's official website at www.siusalukis.com.
