The Southern Illinois University softball squad will face Creighton in an MVC series this weekend and #6 Nebraska (23-7) on Monday on the road. The Salukis are 18-4, 5-1 in the MVC for third place, while the Blue Jays (6-13, 1-5 MVC) are tied for eighth in the Valley. SIU is coming off a sweep of SEMO on Wednesday.
"Creighton is notorious for starting slow and they are much better than their record. I want to get the first win in game one and go from there. They're a good ballclub. We need to play loose at Creighton like we did against Southeast Missouri on Wednesday," Kerri Blaylock, SIU head coach said.
"We just want to worry about winning ballgames and not worry about where we are in the standings. No one loss or win will break or make our MVC season. I had fun watching the kids tonight and we all need to relax in the Valley games."
In addition to three Valley road games in Omaha, Neb. this weekend, the Salukis will play a single contest against #6 Nebraska in Lincoln. The Cornhuskers beat SIU 4-0 on March 7 at the Florida State Invitational this year.
"We want to play regionally and nationally ranked opponents as much as we can. Whether we win or lose, it's a good game for us. It will be great to play in a Big XII atmosphere. We're excited to play them again. We hit with them last time and if we can hit and play defense we'll have a good shot to win," added Blaylock.
The Salukis are 10-13 all-time versus Creighton and 3-7 under Blaylock. SIU is 3-4 overall against Nebraska and 0-2 under Blaylock. The Creighton series with include a 12 p.m. doubleheader on Saturday and a single game on Sunday at the Creighton Sports Complex. The Nebraska game will be at 4 p.m. at Bowlin Stadium.
