Track and Field Teams Finish Third At Cardinal Challenge

Louisville, Ky. - Both SIU's track and field teams finished third at Louisville's Cardinal Challenge Saturday. The women gathered 118 points finishing behind the host school (129) and Cincinnati (127). The men racked up 86 points behind Cincinnati (208) and Eastern Kentucky (88).
Toussaint Wins Two--Kelsey Toussaint was a double winner for the women's squad winning both the 100m and the 200m. Korto Dunbar won the 100m-hurdles (13.87) and was runner-up to Toussaint in the 100m (12.26).
Junior Noa Beitler ran to a first place finish in the 800m clocking a 2:12.69. Freshman Ty Davis was third in that event in 2:14.93.
Inna Turevsky took both horizontal jumps winning the long jump with a leap of 18-5.25 and the triple with a 38-2.25. Hill Medalia was third in the triple jump (37-0.25). Venisha Williams won the discus with a toss of 138-1. Katy Ritten placed fourth (130-2).
Katy Ritten took second in the shot put (42-9), and Megan Cenkush was fourth (40-11.5). Williams and Ritten were third and fourth in the hammer throw with marks of 137-11 and 137-7, respectively.
Dunbar added a point with a sixth place finish in the 400m-hurdles (1:06.90).
SIU Men Nab Three Firsts--Chris Cline was champion of the hammer throw with a toss of 173-11 while Ray Scotten cleared 16-6.75 for first in the pole vault. Julien Garcia won the 1500m breaking the four minute mark with a 3:56.71.
Senior Jeff Young was runner-up in the 110m-high hurdles (14.15), and B.J. Davis ran to a second place finish in the 400m (48.86). Dayton Johnson placed second in the triple jump (47-10).
Seniors Marvin Primo and Kevin Mills were third and fourth in the 100m with times of 10.80 and 10.82, respectively. Joe Byrne and Eli Baker also finished third and fourth in the 5000m in 14:52.14 and 15:13.44.
Senior Paul Whittaker was third in the high jump clearing 6-6.75 while teammate Freddy Rule cleared 6-4.75 for fifth. Johnson placed fifth in the long jump (20-10.75), and Primo picked up fifth place points in the 200 running 21.86.
The Salukis will compete next week at the Sea Ray Relays hosted by Tennessee.
