Carbondale, Ill. - Ross Kowzan, Toby Barnett, Nick Baughman, Eric Haberer and Marshall Tucker were named to the 2003 Missouri Valley Conference Baseball Scholar-Athlete Team, announced earlier today by the league office. Kowzan and Barnett earned first-team honors, while Baughman, Haberer and Tucker garnered second-team recognition.
SIU had the second-most student-athletes recognized by the conference on this year's team, behind Wichita State who led the voting with nine scholar-athletes.
A native of nearby DuQuoin, Ill., Kowzan carries a 3.51 GPA in Biological Science and was named Verizon/CoSIDA Academic All-District V earlier this season. Barnett, on the other hand, hails from Kallaroo, Australia and sports a 3.04 GPA in Community Health.
Meanwhile, Baughman (Bloomington, Ill.) holds a 3.79 GPA in Elementary Education, Haberer (Bloomington, Ill.) carries a 3.32 GPA in Economics and Tucker (St. Louis, Mo.) is a Marketing major with a 3.50 GPA.
Nominees for MVC Scholar-Athlete must be starters or important reserves with at least a 3.00 cumulative grade-point average on a 4.0 scale. Student-athletes must have reached sophomore athletic and academic standing at their institution and must have completed at least one full year at their institution.
Twenty-nine MVC student-athletes were nominated for the scholar-athlete team with 27 receiving recognition for their athletic and academic achievement.
For all five Saluki student-athletes, the MVC Scholar-Athlete honor marks the first in their SIU careers.
