Carbondale, Ill. - Third-seeded Southern Illinois (27-23, 17-13) will open play at the 2003 ConAgra Foods/Missouri Valley Conference Tournament against No. 4 Northern Iowa (27-26, 16-15) on Wednesday, May 21. The Salukis and Panthers will square off in a 11 a.m., contest at Eck Stadium-Tyler Field on the campus of Wichita State University.
Had Evansville beaten Wichita State earlier today, SIU would have gone to the tournament as a two-seed, but the Shockers prevailed, and thus, completed the first-round pairings.
In addition to the SIU/Northern Iowa matchup, top-seeded and regular season champion Southwest Missouri State (33-21, 19-11) will face No. 6 Creighton (20-35, 14-17) on Wednesday at 3 p.m. No. 2 Wichita State (42-24, 19-13) and No. 5 Indiana State (35-20, 15-17) will then round out the first day of play with a 7 p.m., contest.
This year marks SIU's 20th all-time trip to the MVC Tournament and fifth under head coach Dan Callahan. The Salukis are 37-34 in Valley Tournament games.
