Carbondale, Ill. - Senior high jumper Latrice Gray finished tied for eighth at the 2003 NCAA Outdoor Track and Field Championships in Sacramento, Calif., Saturday and received all-American honors for the first time in her career. Gray becomes the first female track and field athlete from SIU to receive outdoor all-American honors in more than thirteen years, the last being Kathleen Raske in 1989.
Placement at the national championships is the only requirement for all-American recognition. The top eight in each individual event earn all-American status. In addition, the top eight American athletes (after displacing any foreign athletes in the top eight finishers) are also accorded the honor. The top eight relay teams (with no displacement of foreign athletes) also are named all-Americans.
Gray, a two-time indoor and two-time outdoor Missouri Valley conference champion in the high jump (2001, 2002), enjoyed her second trip in three years to the national meet. Her jump of 5-10.50 was a season best and just shy of her career best jump of 5-10-.75 - a height that places Gray first all-time on SIU's outdoor best list.
