KIRKWOOD, Mo. - Led by senior Jenny Doehring, who went 7-for-13 with a double and three RBI, SIU outscored its five opponents 35-2 and won four of five games at the Kirkwood Athletic Association 1st Annual Reverse College Exposure Tournament in Kirkwood, Missouri on Saturday and Sunday at the Kirkwood Athletic Association Fields.
The Salukis (9-1) lost their first game of the fall (Truman State) despite shutting out three teams, allowing just 14 hits in five games and playing only two complete seven inning games.
"I thought we played well Saturday (three wins) but let down on Sunday morning (loss to Truman State) before bouncing back Sunday afternoon (to beat SEMO). I'm looking for more consistency from some of our veterans at the plate, even though we're hitting the ball well. We're still trying different lineups and different things with our new people," said Kerri Blaylock, SIU head coach.
"As far as the pitching goes, I'm pleased with the newcomers and want to get them some experience in the fall before the spring season. They're competing and throwing the ball well. Alison Thompson threw a great game in the game we loss."
SIU opened play Saturday with a 12-0, five-inning shutout win over Missouri-St. Louis. Freshman Cassidy Scoggins (2-0) threw a three-hitter and Katie Jordan (2-for-3, 5 RBI, 2 doubles) and Samantha Carter (2-for-3, triple, RBI) led the offense.
The Salukis followed with a 9-1, six-inning win over Meramac (Mo.) Community College, allowing the first run of the fall. Ashley Hamby (2-0) struck out nine and allowed five hits in the win. Jordan (2-for-2, double, RBI) and Doehring (2-for-4, double, RBI) paced the offense.
Saturday was wrapped up by a 10-0, five-inning shutout of Central Missouri State by Amy Harre, who threw a one-hitter and improved to 3-0. Offensively, Doehring (2-for-2, 2 RBI), Alex Pepin (2-for-3, 2 RBI, double) and Lauren Roney (1-for-3, 2 RBI) led the way.
Sunday morning the Salukis suffered their first fall loss 1-0 to Truman State, despite a three-hit, 11 strikeout complete game by Alison Thompson (1-1). A solo homerun accounted for Truman State's lone run, while Haley Viefhaus led the SIU offense with a double in three at-bats. "We just didn't adjust to their rise-ball pitcher," added Blaylock.
Southern Illinois bounced back with a 3-0 shutout over SEMO in the afternoon as Harre (4-0) and Scoggins combined to throw a two-hitter. Harre collected her fourth win without a loss with five no-hit innings and Scoggings picked up her first save of the fall. Scoggins (2-for-2, double, RBI) and Doehring (2-for-3) led SIU on offense.
The Salukis will wrap up the fall season at the Stone City Tournament on Sept. 27-28 in Joliet, Ill.
