Delgado Named D1 Softball Mid-Major and Missouri Valley Conference Pitcher of the Week

CARBONDALE, Ill. - Junior Emily Delgado of the Southern Illinois University softball team has been named both the D1Softball Mid-Major Pitcher of the Week and the Missouri Valley Conference Pitcher of the Week, as announced on Tuesday.
This is the first time Delgado has received either accolade and marks the second consecutive week a Saluki has earned MVC Pitcher of the Week honors (freshman Brooklynn Danielson received the recognition last week).
Facing one of the nation's top offenses in Northern Iowa, Delgado went 2-0 with one save, a 0.00 ERA, and a .200 opposing batting average across three appearances. The junior recorded eight strikeouts and allowed just four hits, zero runs, and two walks.
In game one on Friday, Delgado entered a tied game with two on and two outs in the sixth inning. The Corona, Calif., native kept the contest even at 1-1 with a strikeout to leave two Panthers on base. After SIU took the lead in the bottom of the sixth, Delgado closed the door with a scoreless seventh inning to secure the 2-1 win for the Salukis.
One game later, Delgado earned her fourth save of the season after preserving SIU's lead in the sixth and seventh innings. After a one-out walk, the junior produced a double play to end the game.
Delgado finished off her strong weekend by picking up her second win of the series on Saturday. The junior pitcher entered the game in the fifth and did not allow a run, leading to the 5-3 victory for Southern Illinois.
Across the MVC, Delgado is fifth in ERA (2.70) and third in saves (four). In conference play, the Corona, Calif., native is third in ERA at 2.21.
Delgado and the Salukis will be playing a Tuesday doubleheader today at Murray State, with game one beginning at 2 p.m. in Kentucky.
