Men's Tennis Has Good Showing At Kentucky Invitational

LEXINGTON, KY. - SIU senior Peter Bong and junior Alexandru Nomicos advanced to the second round of the Kentucky Invitational in impressive fashion, but both would go on to lose their next matches, sending them to the fifth place consolation round.
In Flight A1 singles Bong defeated Ryan Gavin of Wright State University with a 6-4, 6-4 victory. Bong went on to do battle with Tigran Martirosyan of Kentucky University in the second round where he was defeated 6-4, 6-4. Also advancing to the second round, Nomicos dominated Morehead State's Daniel Arbib with a 6-1, 6-2 victory, but then loss to Nathaniel Emge of Kentucky, 6-3, 6-2.
In Flight B singles, sophomore Tomas Gonzalez advanced to the semifinals by defeating Levan Datashvili of Evansville 6-2, 6-3. Gonzalez squares off against Kentucky's Chase Armstrong on Saturday. Lukasz Soswa will also be partaking in semifinal competition. Soswa defeated Virgina Tech's Reaves Robinette in a tight 6-3, 6-4 win to advance him to the Flight C semifinals. SIU sophomore Bojan Ilievski was defeated in the first round in Flight A singles by Derek Boland of Evansville 6-2, 6-4. While Ilievski was eliminated from the tournament, he worked his way to the semifinals of the consolation bracket but was beaten by Greg Johnstone of Morehead State 6-3, 6-2. Junior Julian Botero lost his first two matches, eliminating him from all tournament play.
