Moreland Named Gateway Conference Defensive Player of the Week

ST. LOUIS - Junior safety Alexis Moreland, in his quest for the Buck Buchanan Award, which goes to the nation's top defender, was named the Gateway Conference's "Defensive Player of the Week" on Sunday.

Moreland was instrumental in Southern Illinois' victory against Ohio Valley Conference preseason favorite and No. 22-ranked Southeast Missouri State, as the Salukis dominated the Indians in Houck Stadium.

Moreland had a team-best 10 tackles, and picked off a pass, while the Salukis limited SEMO to 227 yards and nearly recorded a shutout (SEMO scored on the final play of the game).

The Salukis snapped a 12-game road losing streak, seven-game non-conference road losing streak, and three-game losing streak to SEMO with the win.
