CARBONDALE, Ill. - It's not his best performance, but it's only two inches short of his best.
Sophomore Ray Scotten, after posting a mark of 16-10.75 (5.15m) in the top collegiate division, placed third at the National Pole Vault Summit in Reno, Nevada. His height was the fourth-best of any college pole vaulter at the two-day competition.
Scotten defeated athletes from such schools as Nebraska, Arizona, Tennessee and Florida. The competition ended with a tie for first place by Paul Gensic of Air Force and John Russell from the University of Akron.
Scotten's mark was 10 inches higher than his posted score at the Saluki Invitation in early December. He vaulted a height of 17-0.75 last season to become the third-best pole vaulter in SIU history.
Full results of the summit can be found at www.polevaultsummit.com. Scotten will return to action this weekend, Jan. 16-17, at the Saluki Booster Invitational held at the SIU Student Rec. Center.
