CARBONDALE, Ill. - After three successful homestands, the Saluki track and field squads will hit the road for thier first indoor meets of the season outside of Carbondale. Both the men's and women's teams are scheduled to compete in the Rod McCravy Memorial, which is hosted by Kentucky, this weekend.
The memorial will take place at the Nutter Field House in Lexington, Ky., on Friday and Saturday, Jan. 30-31. Participating schools include Eastern Kentucky, Miami (Ohio), Tennessee, Mississippi State, Ole Miss, Virginia Tech, Tennessee-Chattanooga and SIU.
The meet will begin Friday evening with one of the men's teams favorite events - the pole vault. Sophomore Ray Scotten is looking for big things after clearing the NCAA provisional mark last weekend with a vault of 17-06.50. Scotten was just shy of being an automatic qualifier when he faulted at 17-09.
Fellow sophomore Felix Anderson, who set the school record and provisionally qualified for the NCAA national meet in the 200-meter dash with a time of 21.24, will also be on hand Saturday with hopes of leading his team to victory.
As Scotten and Anderson continue trying for greatness, junior Venisha Williams will start the meet off for the women's team in the weight throw. Last weekend, Williams set the SIU record in that event with a toss of 60-05.25 - just .08 short of passing the NCAA provisional mark.
Friday's events will begin at 6 p.m., while Saturday's events begin at 10:30 a.m. (Both times are Eastern Standard.) A schedule of events, as well as results of the Rod McCravy Memorial can be found at www.SIUSalukis.com or www.ukathletics.com.
