CARBONDALE, ILL. - After two weeks off, the Southern Illinois men's golf team travels to Springfield, Mo. to take on the 13-team field at the SMS Men's Fall Invitational. The event runs Mon. and Tues. Oct. 18-19 at the Rivercut Golf Course.
"I think the two weeks off helped," said head coach Leroy Newton. "It gave the team a chance to catch up and rest for the final two tournaments of the fall."
In three tournaments this fall the Salukis have already captured one team tournament, winning the John Dallio Memorial Invitational hosted by DePaul. Sophomore Kyle Hosick garnered an individual tournament victory at the Murray State Invitational.
The tournament field will include four Missouri Valley Conference schools including Bradley, Creighton, Northern Iowa and host SMS. Murray St., Eastern Illinois, St. Louis and Southeast Missouri State will also compete in the 13-team tournament.
"We're looking forward to this tournament because it gives us a chance to face some teams that have beaten us in tournaments this fall," said Newton, referring to Murray State and SEMO, who has edged out the Salukis by one and two strokes at separate tournaments this fall.
The tournament will open Mon. with the first 36 holes beginning at an 8:30 a.m. shotgun start.
