CARBONDALE, Ill. - The Southern Illinois University men's golf team is looking to end the fall season on a high note as they travel to Monkey Island, Okla., Sat. and Sun. Oct. 23-24 for the Shangri-La Shootout hosted by Oral Roberts University.
"We want to go out and finish the fall season well," said head coach Leroy Newton. "This is going to be our toughest tournament of the fall, so to finish in the top four would be a great end to the fall season."
The Salukis finished fourth last year in the tournament. Besides host Oral Roberts, St. Louis, UMKC and Central Oklahoma are back from last year's 18-team field.
The Salukis are coming off of a fourth place finish at the SMS Fall Invitational, led by junior Roger Welch who finished tied for the eighth in the 13-team tournament. SIU garnered top-20 finishes from Kyle Hosick (T10th), Sean McNemar (T14th) and Brian Norman (T19th).
"Every tournament someone has stepped it up and played well. Roger, Sean and Kyle have been very consistent for us this fall," said Newton. "I'm looking for the others to play their game and step it up a notch."
