MONKEY ISLAND, Okla. - The Southern Illinois University men's golf team shot a final round score of 301 to hold on to second place in the Shangrila Shootout hosted by Oral Roberts University. The Salukis (290-295-301--886), in a four-way-tie for second through two rounds on day one, finished behind Oklahoma City (297-285-299--882) in the 15-team tournament.
"Overall we didn't play well today," said head coach Leroy Newton. "We're happy with a second place finish, but the team thought their scores should have been better and that the tournament could have been ours."
Kyle Hosick led the Salukis finishing tied for fourth, having shot 72-71-76--219. Andrew Gwinup (73-75-73--221) finished tied for eighth and Roger Welch (70-75-77--222) tied for 12th. Brian Norman (75-75-75--225) and Sean McNemar (77-74-77--228) finished tied for 23rd and 32nd respectively.
Behind Oklahoma City and SIU, Central Oklahoma (888) and Stephen F. Austin St. (888) tied for third and Cameron University (890) rounded out the top five.
"The field included a lot of good teams from the Texas, Oklahoma area and the golf course was pretty tough," said Newton, "Overall we've played pretty well this fall and are looking forward to spring competition."
In five tournaments this fall the Salukis have finished fourth or better, including a team-title at the John Dallio Memorial Invitational hosted by DePaul. Individually sophomore co-captain Hosick has finished in the top ten in all five tournaments this fall including a first place finish at the Murray State Invitational.
