Honolulu, Hawaii - A missed three-pointer by LaMar Owen in the waning seconds of the game sealed the Salukis' fate as they fell to Hawaii 66-64 at the Stan Sherriff Center Monday night in Southern Illinois' first loss of the young season.
A deafening crowd of 6,926 fans dressed in black packed the arena on "Black-Out" Night as the Rainbow Warrior fans held signs reading "SIU We O U," in response to the Salukis 66-62 win over the Bows last February in the ESPN Bracket Buster.
The Bows (3-0) dominated the boards 19-7 in the first half as they led SIU (4-1) at half-time 34-29.
The Salukis tied the game at 46 with 12 minutes left on the clock, but that was the closest SIU came to a lead in the second half.
The Bows were up 65-64 with 15 seconds on the clock and Hawaii missed two clutch free throws only to have SIU travel to the other end of the floor and turn the ball over with an offensive foul.
Hawaii, in double-bonus, sank one of two free throws with 4 seconds left, as SIU missed the jumper at the buzzer.
Darren Brooks led all scorers with a career-high 23 points, five boards, three assists, three steals and two blocks. He reached double-digits in his 40th straight game for the Salukis.
Stetson Hairston contributed 16 points and four steals off the bench for Southern, while Jamaal Tatum added 12 points and two assists and Owen grabbed eight boards and tallied three blocks.
Hawaii's Julian Sensley recorded a double-double, scoring 17 points and adding 11 boards. Other Bows in double figures included Matt Gibson with 11 and Jeff Blackett with 10.
The Salukis head back to the mainland to travel to Arkansas-Little Rock Tuesday, Dec. 7 at 7 p.m. The game will be televised on WSIU-TV.
