CARBONDALE, Ill. - Southern Illinois University head track coach Connie Price-Smith has completed her staff with the hiring of Andre Scott as the new assistant track and field jumps coach, following the resignation of Cameron Wright.
"I think that Andre is going to be a great addition to the staff," said head coach Connie Price-Smith. "He's very knowledgeable in the jumps, so I think he'll come in and make an impact right off the bat. We have a lot of high jumpers and triple jumpers, which he is very familiar with, so I think that it will work out well."
Scott comes to SIU from the University of Pittsburgh, where he coached the men's and women's jumps teams the past two years. So far, his transition into the Saluki program has been smooth.
"It's easy to work here," Scott said. "The staff here gets along very well. I enjoy the close athletic department and the interaction with all of the other sports.
"There is a lot of talent to work with here so I'm just looking forward to getting the athletes up and running," Scott said. "It's just unfortunate that I came in so late. I still think the season will be a positive one for the jumpers."
In two years at Pittsburgh, Scott coached an All-American triple jumper, two Big East Conference and two Eastern College Athletic Conference (ECAC) triple jump champions, and four NCAA regional qualifiers.
In five years as a coach at the professional level, Scott coached Jamaican triple jumper, Trecia Smith, the Jamaican national record-holder, to a fourth place finish at the 2004 Athens Olympic Games.
Prior to his stint at Pittsburgh, Scott spent a year as a volunteer at his alma mater Auburn, where was a seven-time All-American triple jumper and earned three SEC titles as a jumper and sprinter.
The SIU track and field teams hosted the Fast Start Meet Dec. 10 to open their season before the holiday break. The Salukis will resume their indoor season at the Saluki Booster January 21-22 in Carbondale.
