ST. AUGUSTINE, Fla. - SIU freshman Cassidy Scoggins threw a complete game two-hitter in her college debut, leading #24 Southern Illinois University (1-1) to a 2-0 win over Bethune-Cookman (0-7) at the Triple Crown Invitational in St. Augustine, Fla. on Friday. The win evened the Salukis' record after a loss in the season opener to Marshall.
"I'm glad we bounced back to get a win, but I didn't think we were as sharp as we should be," said Kerri Blaylock, Saluki head coach.
Scoggins (1-0) struck out five and walked three, while allowing just one runner to reach third base in her first college start.
SIU gave Scoggins all the assistance she needed in the first two innings. Lindsey Bonnell led off the game with a single and after a sacrifice by Haley Viefhaus moved Bonnell to second, Jenny Doehring doubled in Bonnell for the first run of the game. In the second, Amanda Clifton walked and pinch runner Alex Pepin scored after a sacrifice by Ashley Hamby and two errors by the Wildcats to provide all the runs in the game.
BCC's Lauren McCoy (0-4) allowed three SIU hits, a run and an earned run with five strikeouts and two walks in the loss.
On Saturday the Salukis will face Jacksonville for the first-time at 1 p.m. and will end pool play on Saturday at 6 p.m. with a game against Stetson at the Triple Crown Invitational.
