St. AUGUSTINE, Fla. - Despite a two-hit, eight strikeout performance by freshman Ashley Hamby in her college debut, Southern Illinois University suffered a 2-0 loss to Jacksonville University at the Triple Crown Invitational on Saturday.
The Salukis fall to 1-2 on the season. SIU didn't lose its second game in 2003 until game ten, starting 8-2.
JU pitcher Katie Buell (1-0) allowed three SIU hits, struck out five and walked three to get the win for Jacksonville (4-1). The Dolphins scored both runs in the fourth inning.
Hamby (0-1) allowed a double to open the inning, struck out a batter and then gave up a two-run home run followed by two strikeouts in the fourth for the games only runs. She walked no one and no other batter reached base.
The Salukis best chance to score was in the fifth inning. Haley Viefhaus singled with one out and Kelly Creek followed with another single. Viefhaus and pinch runner Christina Andrews advanced to second and third on Alex Pepin's ground out, but Lindsey Bonnell struck out to end the threat. The Salukis have been held to just nine hits in three games to open the season.
The Salukis will face Stetson later on Saturday evening to end pool play.
