SAN ANTONIO, Texas - It doesn't happen too often in Division I college baseball, where a pitcher throws a eight-hit shutout when both teams are hitting with aluminum bats, but Klae Boehme did it tonight when the University of Texas-San Antonio (8-5) posted a 5-0 win over Southern Illinois (0-12) at the Irish Classic.
Boehme (3-1) struck out six batters, issued three walks and allowed just eight hits in his complete game gem. Also, not one Saluki made it past second base with Boehme on the hill.
While Boehme set the tone on the mound, UTSA's offense immediately went to work.
UTSA scored a pair of unearned runs courtesy of a two-out error in the bottom of the second. Lucas Stewart flied out to right to lead off the inning and Michael McKennon followed with a single to center. After Brandon Saunders struck out swinging, Robbie Johns reached on a throwing error by Saluki third baseman Nathan Emrick.
With two out and runners on the corners following the error, Eric Moreno doubled home both McKennon and Johns to give the Roadrunners an early 2-0 lead.
The Roadrunners added to their lead in the bottom of the sixth, where Stewart tripled off the wall in center.
With one away after McKennon popped up to short, Saunders hit into a fielder's choice. Saunders' grounder to first was fielded by Erik Alvarez, who threw home in attempt to get Stewart. Catcher Brendan Lutz then collided with Stewart after catching Alvarez's throw. The hard collision at the plate would knock the ball out of Lutz's glove, enabling Stewart to score.
A two-run homer by Ryan Crew in the seventh would then ice the 5-0 win.
SIU left eight runners on base and had runners on first and second with one out in each of the fifth, seventh and eighth innings, but that was as far as the Dawgs could get against Boehme.
Offensively, SIU was led by Kevin Koski, Emrick and Nick Baughman, who each went 2-for-4. Cory Newman and Greg Andrews accounted for the other two hits.
Sam Mitchell led UTSA by going 2-for-4. Seven others had one hit apiece to round out the Roadrunners' balanced nine-hit attack.
Right-hander Marshall Tucker (0-4), who had his best start of the year, struck out four batters, allowed eight hits and was touched for five runs in seven innings. Additionally, he went without allowing a walk and held UTSA scoreless for four innings, as his outing marked the longest of any Saluki starting pitcher this season.
SIU will face Penn State in the consolation game of the Irish Classic tomorrow at noon.
