BLOOMINGTON, Ind. - The Southern Illinois University women's track and field team ended with a third place finish Saturday at the Indiana Relays. The Hoosiers (182) took the victory of SIU (145.5) by nearly 37 points, followed by Central Michigan. The Chippawas fell just one point behind IU with 181 points. Missouri Valley Conference foe Indiana State finished fourth with 137.5 points.
Day two saw sprinters Kelsey Toussaint (junior) and Korto Dunbar (senior) finish first and second in the 100-meter dash. Toussaint crossed the line with a time of 12.11 seconds, while Dunbar finished in 12.14 seconds. Toussaint qualified for the NCAA regional meet three weeks ago in the same event.
The duo would return in the 200-meters to snag third and fourth place, but with one twist - Dunbar would ?break the tape' before Toussaint this time. The two sprinters finished with times of 24.38 and 24.44, respectively.
The Salukis were runners-up in the 4x400-meter relay with a time of 3:44.61 - just more than one second slower than the NCAA regional qualifying standard.
Sophomore Megan Cenkush grabbed third place in her specialty - the javelin - with a throw of 35.05 meters, but is was junior Katy Ritten, who won the hammer throw that helped SIU keep third place. Ritten, with a toss of 48.11 meters, defeated two Indiana State throwers.
The Salukis return to action next weekend at the Mt.Sac Relays from April 16-18. Results can be found at www.SIUSalukis.com.
