LAWRENCE, Kan. - The Southern Illinois University softball team defeated Kansas in Monday's single-game, 5-3 decision, in 10 innings at Arrocha Ballpark. With the win, the Salukis improved to 34-11 overall, while the Jayhawks fell to 25-23-1 on the season.
Kansas struck first in the bottom of the third as Mel Wallach led off with a triple to right center. With two outs, Heather Stanley walked and Serena Settlemier came in to pinch hit for Dani May. Settlemier dropped in a single to score Wallach and put the 'Hawks on the board first.
The Salukis took a 2-1 lead in the top of the fifth as Kelly Creek led off with a double to right center. Christina Andrews came into pinch run for Creek and Lindsey Bonnell reached on a catching error by Kansas second baseman Jessica Moppin. Andrews came around to score and Bonnell was moved around to third with a sacrifice bunt on the next play. With just one out, Samantha Carter hit a sac fly to center and Bonnell tagged up to score the Salukis' second run of the inning.
KU answered by tying up the contest in the bottom of that same inning. Moppin walked and was replaced by pinch runner Ashley Goodrich. Sylvia Pfeiffer, pinch hitting for Nettie Fierros, notched a single to put Moppin in scoring position. SIU changed pitchers and Heather Stanley was hit in her next at bat to load the bases for Sandy Smith, who pinch hit for May. Smith hit a sac fly to left field and scored Goodrich to tie up the game.
SIU added a run in the sixth as Adie Viefhaus reached on a fielder's choice and advanced to second on a wild pitch. Cassidy Scoggins singled to left center to score Viefhaus and give the Salukis a 3-2 advantage.
It was do or die for the 'Hawks in the bottom of the seventh. With one out, Stanley doubled to left center and Frankenstein followed with a RBI single to score her and tie the game at three-all.
Both teams were unable to score until the international tie-breaker rule (placing a runner on second base) was utilized in the 10th inning. With Jenny Doehring placed on second, SIU's Samantha Carter singled on a bunt and pushed her to third. Viefhaus notched another sac fly to left field to score Doehring and Clifton reached on an error by Wallach that allowed Carter to score and give SIU a 5-3 lead.
KU came up short in the bottom of the 10th and extended their losing streak to two. SIU's Cassidy Scoggins started in the circle for the 'Hawks and gave up three hits, struck out four and walked two in 4 1/3 innings of work. Alley Thopmpson came into the game during the fourth and gave up four hits and struck out one to earn the win, but it was junior Amy Harre's 10th inning work that sealed the deal. Harre pitched to three batters for three outs to get the save.
On the day, the SIU's offense notched five hits off two different Kansas pitchers while the defense was perfect, committing no errors. Five seperate Salukis snagged SIU's five hits.
SIU will play conference rival Evansville in a mid-week road game Thursday in Evansville, Ind., before hosting a three-game series against Creighton this weekend.
