URBANA, Ill. - Illinois (33-17-1) scored a run in the eighth inning on a double, single and a fielder's choice to beat Southern Illinois 3-2 in game one of a doubleheader Tuesday at Eichelberger Field.
SIU starter Amy Harre allowed a leadoff double to Erin Jones, who advanced to third on a single Jenna Hall. After the pinch runner for hall advanced, Lindsey Hamma grounded to Jenny Doehring at shortstop, and Jones beat the throw home to win the game 3-2.
Illinois jumped out to an early 2-0 lead in the bottom of the third inning. The Illini had two one-out singles and a two-out, two-RBI triple by Lindsey Hamma to drive in Rachelle Coriddi and Erin Jones.
SIU's Katie Jordan cut the lead in half with a towering solo blast to centerfield in the top of the fourth inning, cutting the Illinois lead to 2-1. The home run was her 11th of the season, and set a new Southern Illinois career record with 25 home runs, passing the previous mark of 24 set by all-American Erin Stremsterfer from 1998-2001.
In the sixth inning the Salukis tied the game at 2-2, thanks to an unexpected power surge by Haley Viefhaus. Viefhaus ripped her first home run of the year, the third in her career, over the rightfield fence to even the score.
Haley Viefhaus came right back and made a great defensive play in the bottom of the seventh inning, snagging a line drive with one out and two on and throwing over to first to double off the runner, send the game to extra innings.
SIU's Harre (14-5) allowed three runs, nine hits and a walk. She struck out five in the loss.
UI's Amanda Fortune (21-9) threw a complete game, allowing two runs and four hits without a walk. Fortune struck out nine to pick up the win.
Jordan (1-for-3, HR, RBI, run), Haley Viefhaus (1-for-3, HR, RBI, run), Lauren Roney (1-for-2, double) and Adie Viefhaus (1-for-3) collected the four hits for Southern Illinois.
