CARBONDALE, Ill. - With the Salukis down 3-2 and on the verge of losing their third straight match in three days, the Dawgs looked to senior Peter Bong and sophomore Tomas Gonzalez, playing on the No. 1 and No. 5 courts, as their only hope of coming away with a victory against the Bradley Braves.
Junior Alexandru Nomicos and sophomore Lukasz Soswa had already given SIU two wins, as Nomicos defeated Mark Muskievicz at the No. 2 singles spot (6-1, 7-5), while Sowa chalked up a win at the No. 6 spot as he defeated Bradley's Alex Roby (6-2, 6-3). The Salukis dropped the doubles point and also lost at the No. 3 and No. 4 single spots to give the Braves the 3-2 advantage heading into the final two matches.
Gonzalez came through for the Dawgs as he picked up an impressive (6-1, 4-6, 6-2) win at the No. 5 spot over Matt Metully, tying up the contest at 3-3. With the score knotted, all eyes aimed towards the No. 1 singles court. SIU's Peter Bong and Bradley's Marko Marevic would battle it out for the win.
In the first set Marevic edged out Bong with a 7-6 win, but Bong would not let his guard down and came storming back to take the second set 6-4. Bong looked sharp as he has all year in the second set and looked determined to capture the win for the Dawgs. As the third set began Bong , as he did yesterday, began to cramp up. After having to take break to see a trainer Bong came back to the court, but looked as if he had lost a couple steps due to the injury. Bong put forth a valent effort, but it was Marevic who came away with the win at the No. 1 spot and gave the Braves the win over the Salukis.
After a tough weekend the Salukis will try to get back on the winning track as they will play their last two home matches of year next weekend against Wichita State and Southwest Missouri State on April 9 and 10.
