CARBONDALE - Indiana State hurlers Brian Woods and Joe Thatcher dominated Southern Illinois hitters Saturday, combining to give up just one earned run and six hits in 15 innings of work, as the Sycamores swept a doubleheader from the Saluki baseball team, 2-1 and 10-0, at Abe Martin Field.
Thatcher, a senior southpaw, used an assortment of off-speed pitches -- including a sharp curveball -- to baffle Saluki hitters in the opener. He went the distance, struck out eight and walked just one SIU batter in a seven inning game.
Woods, who entered the game with a 6.59 earned run average, was even stronger than Thatcher in the nightcap. He retired the first 19 batters he faced before Kevin Koski broke up his perfect game by reaching on an one-out error in the sixth. Greg Andrews then broke up Woods' no-hit attempt with a two-out single moments later.
But that was pretty much the only positive news of the day for the Salukis.
Jason Chavez took the tough-luck loss in the opener, despite giving up just five hits and one earned run in seven innings. He matched Thatcher pretty much pitch-for-pitch in a complete-game effort -- with the exception of a two-run ISU fourth in which he was touched for three hits and hurt by an error.
Ryan Bond led off that inning with an infield single, and he came around to score the first run of the game on a Marcus Artner double. Rance Fosdick then singled to put runners at first and third with one out.
Jeremy Hatler then hit a grounder to Nathan Emrick at first, and Emrick tried to cut down Artner at home. Unfortunately his throw was wild, allowing what would prove to be the game-winning run to score.
Chavez was able to work out of the inning without further damage, as the Salukis cut a runner down at the plate on an attempted squeeze bunt, and Koski made a diving catch in left to end the inning.
The Salukis used a two-out rally in the fifth to score their only run of the day.
Koski was hit by a pitch to get things started, and P.J. Finigan followed with a double. Emrick then executed a perfect squeeze play, placing the ball perfectly between the third baseman and pitcher to drive in Koski from third with an infield hit. But Thatcher got Greg Andrews to fly out to end the inning, and the Salukis went quietly after that.
The Sycamores (17-27, 9-13) got off to a great start in the second game, as their first two batters reached before Josh Prickett launched launched a homer to left of SIU starter Marshall Tucker to give ISU a 3-0 lead before a batter was even retired.
That was more than enough support for Woods, who went on to strike out four and walk nobody in a eight-inning complete game shutout.
A five-run ISU fourth broke the game wide open.
Prickett wound up going 2-for-4 with four RBI in the second game.
SIU drops to 18-26-1 overall and 12-13-1 in the Missouri Valley Conference. SIU will look to split their four-game series with the Sycamores tomorrow at 1 p.m.
