CHICAGO, ILL. - The Southern Illinois University men's golf team weathered 30 to 40 mile an hour winds to shoot a 310 and win the John Dallio Memorial Invitational. The Salukis (283-286-310--879) posted three players in the top ten10 to win their first team title of the season.
Kyle Hosick led the Salukis finishing third with a 216. Roger Welch shot a career-best 219 to finish sixth and Brian Norman (221) tied for 10th.
"We just went out and played our game," said head coach Leroy Newton. "I like to think we can deal with the weather conditions better than the other teams, and we certainly proved it today. Our scores weren't as low as we can shoot, but it got the job done."
After day one of the tournament, the team was tied for first shooting 569, a SIU all-time best 36-hole score.
Other Saluki golfers included Sean McNemar (226) and Andrew Gwinup (233).
"We rode our top golfers, and everyone else just filled in," said Newton. "Gwinup shot a career-best 71 in the second round that kept us in the tournament. That's what it takes to be a great team."
SIU won by three strokes over St. Louis University (882). Wisconsin-Green Bay (890) slipped to third after tying the Salukis on day one. The College of William and Mary (890) tied for third and Cleveland State University (891) rounded out the top five of the 13-team tournament.
The Salukis travel to Murray, Ky. Oct. 4-5 for the Murray State Invitational and then to Tuscola, Ill. Oct. 11-12 for the Eastern Illinois Invitational at the Ironhorse Golf Course.
