RICHMOND, Ky. - The Southern Illinois University men's tennis team came out of their first weekend of spring play in Richmond, Ky. 2-1. The Salukis picked up wins against Wright State (4-3) and Lipscomb (4-3), while dropping a dual match to host Eastern Kentucky (4-3).
The Dawgs swept the doubles matches against Wright State and Lipscomb with junior Bojan Ilievski and senior Lukasz Soswa a perfect 2-0 in doubles, winning both matches 9-8.
Sophomore Rodrigo Lama and junior Tomas Gonzalez led SIU with 2-1 records in singles play. Lama, defeating Lance Koetter of Wright State (7-6, 6-3) and Jon Houston of Lipscomb (6-2, 6-2) and Gonzalez taking Mike Sherman of Lipscomb (6-2, 6-2) and Chase Armstrong of EKU (6-2, 7-5).
Freshman Nick Bauer was 2-0 on the weekend defeating Mario Simic of EKU (8-2) and Pedro France of Lipscomb (6-3, 6-4).
The Dawgs are back in action Jan. 28-30 when they travel to Des Moines, Iowa to Drake to compete at the Missouri Valley Conference Individual Championships.
