Men's Tennis competed in Louisville Invitational

CARBONDALE, Ill. - The Men's Tennis team competed in the Louisville Invitational this weekend. Leading the way for the Salukis was Bojan Ilievski who made it to the semifinals of Flight "B" singles.
The 14-team Louisville Invitational featured three singles flights and two doubles flights. The Salukis left three players home for the weekend to recuperate. Sergio Sanchez and Rodrigo Lama were sick, while Feilpe Villasenor was resting an injured shoulder.
Andrei Bubnov made it to the quarterfinals of Flight "A" before losing to Marcus Sundh of Kentucky 6-3, 6-0, who ended up winning the tournament.
"He had a really good tournament," said Coach Nelson. "It's nice to see Andrei play well. The more he plays, the more he gets comfortable with college tennis here in America."
Tomas Gonzalez was defeated by Chris Welnetz of Saint Louis (6-2, 6-3) in the opening round. Gonzalez then went on to the semifinals of the consolation bracket where he defaulted his match. He defaulted so the team could get back to Carbondale in time to attend the SIU Academic Banquet Sunday afternoon. Gonzalez was a recipient of the Kenny and Lisa Troutt Scholarship.
In Flight "B" singles Nick Bauer went 2-1 defeating Ra'ees Ismail of Xavier (6-4, 7-5) and Chad True of Western Kentucky (6-4, 2-6, 7-6) before losing in the quarterfinal match to Evan West of Butler (6-0, 6-3). Ilievski finished the weekend 3-1. He made it to the semifinal match where he was defeated by Prakoso Imanuel of Chicago State (6-2, 6-0).
"I really thought Bojan could have won the whole thing, but he got a little tired at the end," said Nelson. "We have a few things to work on as far as being tournament fit."
Kellman, a walk-on from New York, went 0-2 in his first tournament as a Saluki.
"Overall, we did well," said Nelson. "It would have been nice to have our entire team there because I think we would have done really well, but I am pleased with how we finished."
The team will conclude their fall season at the ITA Regionals October 20-24.
