Men's golf takes fifth at Missouri State / Rivercut Invitational

SPRINGFIELD, Mo. - After finishing the second round tied for second, the Southern Illinois University golf team was not able to hold on and slipped to fifth in the final round of the Missouri State / Rivercut Invitational Tuesday afternoon.
Hosted by Missouri State University, the Missouri State / Rivercut Invitational was a 54-hole tournament that took place at Rivercut Golf Course. The par-72 course played at 7,066 yards.
The Salukis posted a 7-over-par 295 in the final round to finish in fifth place with a 20-over 884.
Western Illinois University led the tournament wire-to-wire, taking the title with a 4-over-par 868.
Senior co-captain Sean McNemar led SIU individually. His rounds of 74-69-74--217 were good enough to finish eighth.
Co-captain Roger Welch had the low final round for the Salukis. The senior carded a 1-under 71 in the final round to finish with a 5-over-par 221, placing himself in a tie for 17th, his best finish this season.
Junior transfer Mark Schmitz posted a 76 in the final round to finish tied for 26th with an 8-over-par 224.
Daniel Tomlin and Chad Cooper round out SIU scoring with 10-over-par 226s, finishing tied for 31st.
Tomlin posted his best round of the tournament in the final round with a 2-over 74 while Cooper's final-round 78 dropped him from being tied for 15th to tied for 31st.
Junior Braxton Weaver competed as an individual in the 54-hole tournament. Weaver shot rounds of 82-87-85--254 to finish 69th.
Oklahoma City University's Anthony Michael fired a 5-under 67 in the final round to come from behind and take the individual title.
SIU was able to get a sneak peek at its MVC competition this week as five other Valley schools participated in the event.
The Salukis finished one stroke behind 2005 MVC Champion Illinois State while finishing ahead of Bradley (6th), Missouri State (7th), Northern Iowa (9th) and Creighton (12th).
Southern Illinois concludes its fall season Oct. 24 - 25 at the Oral Roberts University Invitational at Battle Creek Golf Club in Tulsa, Okla.
