Three Salukis qualify for ITA Regional Tournament

CARBONDALE, Ill. - The Men's Tennis team competed in the first day of action at the Wilson/ITA Central Region Championships hosted by the University of Tulsa.
Andrei Bubnov won both of his qualifying round matches Thursday. First, in the qualifying round of 32 he defeated Alfredo Lagarda of Illinois State (6-4, 6-1). In the qualifying round of 16, Bubnov went on to defeat Alexander Dargel of Oral Roberts (6-4, 6-1). Bubnov is scheduled to play the #2 seed Marek Velicka of Oklahoma in the opening round of the 64-player tournament.
Bojan Ilievski defeated Chris Miller of Creighton (6-4, 6-1) in the qualifying round of 32, but then lost in the next round to the #1 seed Eduardo Autran of Arkansas-Little Rock (6-3, 6-2).
In the qualifying round of 32, Sergio Sanchez lost to Juan Carlos Nunez from Arkansas-Little Rock (7-6 (5), 6-2). Tomas Gonzalez was defeated in the same round by Chris Lueth of Drake (7-6 (5), 6-3). Sanchez and Gonzalez then played in the qualifying backdraw where they both had victories. Sanchez defeated Michael Limoges of St. Louis (6-1, 6-2) and Gonzalez won against Matt Rineberg of St. Louis (3-6, 6-4, 6-2).
The Salukis continuing on to the tournament field of 64 are Bubnov, Rodrigo Lama and Feilpe Villasenor. Bubnov is scheduled to play the #2 seed Marek Velicka of Oklahoma, Lama will face Juan Felipe Diaz of Oklahoma State and Villasenor will take on John Kellert of Missouri State.
The doubles team of Sanchez and Villasenor will go up against the #1 seed Rohan Gajjar and Adrians Zguns of Arkansas. Also representing the Salukis in the doubles tournament will be the duo of Gonzalez and Lama who will face Dalibor Pavic and Sergi Vila of Drake in the first round.
