Fall season ends for Men's Tennis

CARBONDALE, Ill. - The Southern Illinois Men's Tennis doubles team of Sergio Sanchez and Feilpe Villasenor made it to the quarterfinals of the Wilson/ITA Central Region Championships. The duo started the tournament as the underdogs, but were able to pull off the upset against the #1 seeded team of Rohan Gajjar and Adrians Zguns (Arkansas) 8-5 in the opening round of the doubles bracket.
Sanchez and Villasenor also came away with a victory in their round of 32 match up with Nenad Curcic and Jeff Stone (Missouri State) as they defeated them 9-7. The win put the duo in a quarterfinal match against Boris Gubic and Goran Bujaklija (WSU). The #6 seeded team defeated the Saluki pair by the score of 8-5.
The doubles team of Sanchez and Villasenor had the best finish for the Salukis in the most important and final tournament of the fall season.
In the singles bracket, all Salukis were out of the tournament by the end of the first day. Andrei Bubnov lost in the opening round to the #2 seed Marek Velicka (Oklahoma) 6-1, 6-2. Rodrigo Lama fell to Juan Felipe Diaz (Oklahoma State) 2-6, 6-2, 6-1. Villasenor was able to get past the first round by defeating John Kellert (Missouri State) 7-6 (3), 7-5, but was not able to get past the next round as he lost to Sergi Vila (Drake) 6-3, 6-2.
The Salukis will return to action when the spring season begins in January.
