CARBONDALE, Ill. - There were not many highlights for the Salukis Men's Tennis team during their first day of action at the Wilson/ITA Central Regional Championships, but there was one major accomplishment. The doubles team of Sergio Sanchez and Feilpe Villasenor defeated the #1 seeded doubles team of Rohan Gajjar and Adrains Zguns (Arkansas) 8-5.
Coach Dann Nelson said, "This is a huge win for us, to knock off the #1 seeded team is just fantastic."
Sanchez and Villasenor take on Nenad Curcic and Jeff Stone of Missouri State in the round of 16 Saturday morning.
Villasenor was the only Saluki to win a match in the singles side of the tournament. He won his first match of the day against John Kellert (Missouri State) 7-6 (5), 7-5 to move on to the round of 32. It was there that he lost to Sergi Vila (Drake) 7-6 (3), 7-5.
In other singles action, Andrei Bubnov lost in the opening round to the #2 seed and nationally ranked #35, Marek Velicka (Oklahoma) 6-1, 6-2. Rodrigo Lama also fell in the first round to Juan Felipe Diaz (Oklahoma State) 2-6, 6-2, 6-1. In the backdraw singles Bubnov lost to Lucques Maasdorp (Tulsa) 6-4, 6-3 and Lama fell to Eduardo Autran (Ark. Little Rock) 6-7(5), 6-2, 6-2.
