CARBONDALE, Ill. - Hunter Harrigan hit a two-out game-winning single in the bottom of the 11th inning to lead Southern Illinois (16-9) to a 4-3 win over Tennessee-Martin (5-17) earlier today in non-league action at Abe Martin Field.
Skyhawk sidearm reliever Dustin Summers intentionally walked Saluki freshman Ryan Enata to get to Harrigan in the 11th.
Since Harrigan went hitless in his first five at-bats, the move seemed like a good one at the time, but the native of Highlands Ranch, Colo., made Summers pay.
Matt Brewer led off the 11th with a single and moved to second on a sacrifice bunt by Grant Gerrard. Nathan Emrick then flew out to center before Summers walked Enata.
With two outs and runners on first and second, Harrigan's fly ball went over Zane Gresback's head and smacked off the wall in left field, allowing Brewer to score.
Early on, it appeared as though SIU had things under control.
Freshman Ryan Terry, who took the mound for his first SIU start, allowed one hit and struck out two in five scoreless frames, as the Saluki offense built a 3-0 lead.
Then, in the sixth, Terry was replaced by Ryan Welch, one of five Saluki relievers to pitch over the remainder of the game.
Welch and Jason Chavez each posted a strikeout in one scoreless inning to get the Dawgs to the eighth.
It was then, where Mark Obszanski gave up a three-run homer to eight-hole hitter Brian Berryman, which knotted the game at 3-3.
Left-hander Adam Snyder took over for Obszanski immediately after Berryman's bomb, and retired UTM's final two hitters of the eighth inning.
Snyder pitched effectively for 2.2 scoreless innings, where he struck out three and didn't allow a hit.
UTM had its chances after it had a pair of runners on base in each of the 10th and 11th innings.
However, with runners on second and third in the 10th, Snyder got Berryman to pop up to first, and struck out Chris Rezabeck.
Saluki closer Andrew Weber entered the game in the 11th, where a one-out single by Nick Luper and a walk by Nick Bruner gave UTM runners at first and second.
But, Weber struck out Brett Spivy, and on the same play, Luper was called out on a 2-3-5 putout.
Of the six Saluki pitchers, Weber (3-1) was credited with the win.
Summers (0-1) took the fall for UTM. He allowed five hits and one run, while posting a strikeout.
Offensively, SIU out-hit UTM, 13-6.
P.J. Finigan led all Salukis with three hits, as he finished the day at 3-for-5 with a double, one run scored and two RBI.
Brewer, Enata and Tyler Lairson followed with two hits apiece.
Additionally, the Dawgs left 14 runners on base.
Zach Dean went a perfect 3-for-3 with a run scored to top the Skyhawks.
SIU returns to Missouri Valley Conference play this weekend when it heads to Creighton for a three-game series beginning Friday at 3 p.m.
