OMAHA, Neb.-The Creighton baseball team beat Southern Illinois, 5-3, Friday afternoon despite spotting the Salukis three runs in the first inning. The Bluejays improve to 21-6 overall and 4-0 in the MVC while SIU falls to 16-10 and 3-1 in the Valley.
The Salukis first inning rally started on a Jeff Daneff strike out of P.J. Finigan. After Finigan swung and missed at a pitch in the dirt, the ball headed to the backstop allowing Finigan to reach first base.
A single by Matt Brewer followed by a double off the bat of Grant Gerrard scored Finigan and gave SIU its first run of the inning. An error on the throw into the infield allowed Brewer to score from third base. An RBI-single by Dean Cademartori allowed SIU to jump out to a 3-0 lead.
SIU looked to add more runs in the second inning, working the bases loaded. Daneff was able to coax an inning ending doubleplay to escape without damage. CU turned four doubleplays in the game.
Creighton's rally started in the third inning on a Chase Odenreider lead-off double. A two-out single through the left side of the infield by Tony Roth scored Odenreider from third.
CU added one run each in the fourth and fifth innings. A bases loaded ground out by Colin Shockey scored Gabe Lapito in the fourth.
In the fifth, Dan Norquist tripled to right-center field and was promptly brought home on a sacrifice fly to center off the bat of Zach Daeges to tie the game, 3-3.
Creighton eventually took the lead in the sixth inning. Chris Gradoville - starting in the outfield for the first time of his career - led off with a single. Jim Hinrichs, pinch running for Gradoville, moved over to second on a sac bunt by Odenreider.
A triple to deep center field by Shockey scored Hinrichs to give CU a 4-3 lead. The next batter, Brad Dutton, placed a perfect bunt down the first base line that scored Shockey and went for a base hit.
Scott Reese entered the game in the top of the sixth inning with the score tied. The sophomore would improve to 7-0 on the season by pitching 4.0 shutout innings. Reese struck out one and allowed just two hits.
Daneff started on the mound for Creighton. The junior pitched five innings, allowing three runs on seven hits. He recorded six strike outs while walking four.
Tyler Norrick (2-1) suffered his first loss of the season. Norrick struck out six Bluejays while allowing four earned runs on eight hits.
CU and SIU will play the second game of the three-game series Saturday. First pitch is scheduled for 1:00 p.m.
