Baseball Falls to Northern Illinois, 9-3

CARBONDALE, Ill. - Northern Illinois (1-5) registered 16 hits and received an impressive complete game performance by right-hander Brian Smith en route to a 9-3 win over Southern Illinois (7-5) earlier today at Abe Martin Field. Despite the loss, the Salukis won the series, 2-1.
Smith threw a no-hitter up until the seventh inning, struck out five and gave up five hits in his nine-inning gem.
The Dawgs ruined Smith's no-hit bid by scoring two runs on a pair of hits in the seventh.
Ryan Hypke drove in SIU's first run of the game when his single scored Dean Cademartori.
Kevin Koski also delivered a run-scoring single, and Brendan Lutz touched home to narrow the Huskies' lead to 6-2 going into the eighth.
NIU, however, added another run in the top of the eighth and two more in the ninth to seal its 9-3 win.
Smith evened his record to 1-1 on the year.
Jason Chavez (1-2) suffered the loss for SIU. He struck out five and walked three in 6.1 innings.
Offensively, the Salukis finished with five hits, as Koski, Cademartori, Hypke, Lutz and Grant Gerrard each had one.
Kyle Cherney went 3-for-5 with a run scored and two RBI to lead the Huskies.
Additionally, NIU committed seven errors before picking up its first win of the season.
The Salukis return to action on Wednesday, Mar. 9 when they visit SE Missouri State. First pitch is set for 3 p.m., at Capaha Park.
