EVANSVILLE, Ind. - Evansville made six errors and #23 SIU beat the Purple Aces 8-1 in game two, sweeping a doubleheader on Thursday at Cooper Stadium. The Salukis had nine hits and improved to 34-9, 12-2 in MVC play.
The Salukis jumped out to the lead with two outs in the second inning on a Krystal Stein single followed by a Lauren Roney RBI double for a 1-0 lead. Evanvsille (13-22, 4-10 MVC) made two consecutive errors, allowing Roney to score for a 2-0 advantage.
Evansville's Juliet Nickelson cut the lead to 2-1 in the fourth inning, hitting a solo home run to left field, her second of the year. The home run was just the third allowed all year by SIU starter Ashley Hamby, and she retired the next three hitters to end the inning.
The Salukis responded in the next at bat, scoring five runs in the top of the fifth inning. Stein led off with a single and moved to second base on a sacrifice by Roney. Kelly Creek singled and Stein scored to make it 3-1 SIU.
Katie Jordan walked and Katie Louis singled to load the bases with Creek at third base. Maria Damico singled to left field and Evansville's leftfielder Liz Mooney made an error, allowing the ball to get by her and roll all the way to the fence, scoring Creek, Jordan and Louis. UE shortstop Cassey Kemna made an error on Amanda Clifton's ground ball with two outs and Damico scored the inning's fifth run for a 7-1 SIU lead.
Southern Illinois added a run in the sixth inning after Tiffanie Dismore singled, stole a base and scored on two wild pitches by Evansville reliever Casey Clutch to give SIU an 8-1 lead.
Hamby (4-0) picked up her first win since March 23 after allowing just one run and five hits without a walk in five innings of work. Cassidy Scoggins threw two innings of hitless relief, striking out three.
UE's Danny Murphy (6-10) allowed four hits, two runs and three walks with nine strikeouts.
The Salukis are at home this weekend for a three-game MVC series with SMS on Saturday and Sunday at Charlotte West Stadium.
