EVANSVILLE, Ind. - Tyler Norrick threw a one-hit shutout with eight strikeouts, and Southern Illinois (25-15, 9-6) scored eight runs in the fifth inning to fuel a 13-0 blanking of Evansville (30-13, 8-7) earlier today at Braun Stadium.
The game, which ended in seven innings, due to the league's 10-run rule, gave SIU its third series win against a Missouri Valley Conference opponent this season. The Salukis also beat UE in a series for just the second time under 11-year head coach Dan Callahan.
Norrick started and pitched one inning in Friday's suspended series-opener, but returned to the mound today.
A native of Festus, Mo., Norrick whiffed four of the first six UE hitters he faced, and all those strikeouts came, consecutively, between the first and second innings. Also, Norrick allowed his only hit in the fifth inning, where Eric Jones singled.
While Norrick was keeping the Purple Aces guessing, UE starter Fred Jones struggled, as eight of SIU's first 10 baserunners reached on either a walk, hit by pitch or error.
Jones fell behind, 2-0, after SIU scored a pair of unearned runs, including one in each of the second and fourth innings. Those runs came after the leadoff man in both of those frames walked.
Then, SIU exploded for a combined 11 runs on nine hits in the fifth and sixth innings, as 19 Salukis came to the plate. Additionally, 10 of SIU's 13 runs in the game scored with two outs.
With the bases loaded and two outs in the fifth, Erik Alvarez (single) and Chris McCulloch (double) delivered back-to-back two-RBI hits to start the onslaught. After going his last 13 games without a RBI, Matt Brewer followed with a single to center, and McCulloch scored.
Brewer would later score on a single by Tyler Lairson, before P.J. Finigan's two-RBI double capped the eight-run rout.
SIU added three more runs in the sixth, as McCulloch, Brewer and Ryan Hypke accounted for the RBIs to seal the 13-0 pounding.
Norrick (3-1) one-hit UE in seven innings to polish off the first complete game shutout of his career. He also walked two, as only seven Purple Aces reached base against him.
Jones (4-3) scattered two hits, gave up six runs, walked five, hit two batters and posted one strikeout in 4.2 innings.
Brewer went 3-for-4 with a run scored and three RBI to lead SIU, who registered 10 hits on the day.
McCulloch followed with two hits, as he finished at 2-for-3 with a double, two runs scored and three RBI. Kevin Koski, Finigan, Harrigan, Alvarez and Lairson also had hits for the Dawgs. Koski's hitting streak now stands at 16 games.
Additionally, today's game marked the second time SIU has run-ruled a league opponent this season.
SIU returns home to face SE Missouri State Wednesday at 3 p.m.
