CARBONDALE, Ill. - Southern Illinois (28-8) will try to extend its 11-game winning streak on the road Wednesday, when the Salukis face non-conference rival Southeast Missouri State (16-13) in a 3 p.m. doubleheader at the Southeast Softball Complex in Cape Girardeau, Mo.
SIU just finished a 6-0 week that included a Wednesday doubleheader sweep over St. Louis, a win over #15 Missouri last Thursday, and its first three-game sweep of Illinois State in school history over the weekend.
The Salukis are 7-0 in midweek games this season, including the three wins last week. Southern Illinois has swept all three midweek doubleheaders against Samford, Wright State and St. Louis and the single game against Missouri.
"We like to play midweek games because we're at a point in the season where we need to play and we're not just out there practicing. I think it's a great rivalry with SEMO. Our kids know each other well. They are playing well and we've talked to our kids about winning all our non-conference games and winning the week. We have to really stay focused to stay on a roll," said Kerri Blaylock, Saluki head coach.
SIU has won 11 straight games for the second time this season and has won 22 of its last 23 games. The Redhawks are 4-4 in their last eight games, including being swept by Evansville last week in a doubleheader.
Southern Illinois has won eight straight versus SEMO under coach Blaylock and 12 of 13 in her first five years. The Salukis lead the all-time series 69-28-1, including 3-0 and 3-1 wins at West Stadium in 2004. SE Missouri State coach Lana Richmond is 673-435-2 overall in 23 years.
