Men's Tennis Edged Out by SMS, 4-3

SPRINGFIELD, MO. - The Southern Illinois University men's tennis team dropped a tough match Saturday as Southwest Missouri State narrowly defeated SIU, 4-3, at the SMS courts.
The Salukis got off to a slow start, dropping all three doubles matches, giving SMS an early 1-0 lead. However, the Dawgs climbed their way back into the match after posting three wins in singles play to tie the match, 3-3.
The contest came down to the No. 5 singles match, which featured SIU junior Bojan Ilievski facing off against John Kellert. Ilievski took an early lead as he picked up a 6-2 win in the first set, but Kellert came back and mounted a 6-4 win of in the second set. While Gonzalez battled to the end, it was Kellert who eventually took the win with a 7-5 victory in the third set.
The Salukis fell to 0-2 in Missouri Valley Conference play and 6-7 on the year. The Salukis will be back in action tomorrow when they head to Wichita State to take on the Shockers.
