Four Salukis Named To MVC Softball Scholar-Athlete Team

ST. LOUIS, Mo. - Southern Illinois placed an MVC-high four student-athletes on the 2005 MVC Scholar-Athlete Team released by the MVC Office on Tuesday.
Seniors Amy Harre, Katie Jordan and Maria Damico were named to the MVC First Team Scholar-Athlete Team and sophomore Cassidy Scoggins was named to the second team in a vote by the league sports information directors.
"I'm really proud of any kid that can earn this accomplishment, because it means they can balance academics and athletics, especially the great students. We have kids that are very good athletes and students, which is a blessing," said Kerri Blaylock, SIU head coach.
Harre was named to the first team for the third straight year, Jordan collected her second straight first team honor and third overall (Honorable Mention, 2003) and Damico earned her second honor after grabbing honorable mention honors in 2003. The award is the first for Scoggins.
Harre, a Nashville, Ill. native, has a 3.649 grade point average in physiology and has been named an Academic All-American the last two years, earning 1st Team honors in 2004. She was also 1st Team Academic All-District V the last two years and has been named to the SIU Dean's List four times.
On the field, Harre went 22-7 with a 1.09 ERA, tying her career-high for wins. For the season, She has 12 shutouts, a no-hitter, 24 complete games, and 163 strikeouts in 200 innings. In MVC play, Harre is 12-2 with a 0.88 ERA, seven shutouts, 11 complete games, and 67 strikeouts in 95 innings.
In her career, Harre's 83 wins and 121 starts are SIU and MVC records. Her 147 appearances are an SIU record and second in Valley history (148). Harre improved her school-record of innings pitched to 806.1 and her 48 career shutouts are an SIU and MVC-record as well. She's also second at SIU with a 0.99 career ERA and is third with 696 career strikeouts.
Jordan, a Fenton, Mo. native carries a 3.396 grade point average in mathematics. She set a new SIU single season record with 14 homers, which extended her SIU career-record to 39. The 39 home runs break the Valley record of 37. Her nine Valley home runs in a season ties the league record with two others, including teammate Katie Louis (2003). Jordan is second all-time at SIU with 129 RBI, just three shy of the record and is hitting a career-high .328 overall and .446 in Valley games.
Damico, a Gray Summit, Mo. native, has a 3.784 grade point average in finance. Damico is hitting a career-high .286 with an MVC and career-best 41 RBI, and a career-high 13 home runs and .614 slugging percentage (2nd in MVC). Her 32 runs scored and 86 total bases are also career-bests.
Scoggins, an Owasso, Okla. native, carries a 3.368 grade point average in food and nutrition. She is 20-3 overall with an MVC-best 0.50 ERA, a perfect game, four no-hitters, nine shutouts, 17 complete games in 18 starts, 179 strikeouts in 139.2 innings, a .114 opponents average, 10 earned runs and just 11 extra base hits allowed in 465 at bats.
In Valley play, Scoggins is 11-1 with a 0.36 ERA, seven shutouts, a .098 opponents average, four earned runs allowed, 10 complete games in 10 starts, 102 strikeouts in 78 innings and five extra base hits in 254 at bats. The weekend left her with a school-best 0.82 career ERA and .825 career winning percentage (33-7). She's tied for sixth at SIU with nine shutouts in a season and sixth with 15 career shutouts.
