CARBONDALE, Ill. - Southern Illinois University men's tennis head coach Missy Jeffrey announced her resignation Monday. The program showed steady progress during her five years at the helm and finished the 2005 campaign with an 8-10 record.
Faced with a rebuilding job when she took over in 2000, the Salukis compiled a 14-39 record in Jeffrey's first three seasons. However, she reversed the tide the past two seasons recording a combined 18-20 record.
"We've improved a lot from year-to-year," Jeffrey said. "Whichever coach comes in is going to have a team that can vie for a conference championship."
Jeffrey was one of the all-time great women's tennis players at SIU from 1987 to 1991. She recorded 100 career singles wins and qualified for the Midwest Regionals at #1 singles and doubles in 1990.
"Missy has done a wonderful job elevating our program," Saluki athletics director Paul Kowalczyk said. "It's unfortunate that she's decided not to stick around to see the fruits of her labor, but we certainly appreciate her years of service and wish her nothing but the best."
Jeffrey said she has no immediate plans to return to coaching.
"I love SIU, and what Paul and (Associate AD) Kathy (Jones) have done here in the last five years has been amazing," she said. "It's been an honor to serve the athletic department."
