CARBONDALE, Ill. - The Saluki Men's Tennis team finished play at the Middle Tennessee Fall Invitational Sunday. The Salukis had five players make it into the semi-finals of the singles division.
A few of the players had to compete through pain. Coach Dann Nelson was just happy to finish the weekend without any major injuries.
"We played well, especially considering there were a few guys who played injured," said Nelson. "They never quit though and we were able to come out without any big injuries."
Andrey Bubnov may have seriously injured his left wrist, but continued to play two more matches. He will have the injury looked at once he returns to Carbondale.
One area of play that Nelson said the team definitely needs to improve on is doubles. None of the doubles teams were able to pull out a victory this weekend.
"I am really pleased with the singles portion of the tournament, but we need to work on doubles," said Nelson. "We need a lot of work on doubles."
Sergio Sanchez was the only player to win his semi-final competition and that was by forfeit since the other player was a no-show.
Tomas Gonzalez lost in the semi-finals to Javier Rodriguez of Belmont 6-4, 6-1. Feilpe Villasenor also fell to Nick Cromydas of Vanderbilt 6-2, 6-3. Bojan Ilievski took his semi-final match to three sets, but came up short losing to Ivan Besancon from Freed-Hardeman 6-3, 1-6, 6-2 and Nick Bauer lost to Juan Pablo Gomez of Tennessee Tech 6-0,6-2.
The men head to Lexington next weekend to compete in the Kentucky Invitational.
