INDIANAPOLIS- After firing a 3-under-par 68 in the first round of the Butler Fall Golf Invitational, senior co-captain Sean McNemar posted a similar score in the final round to finish with a 5-under-par 137, helping Southern Illinois University to a second-place finish at its first tournament of 2005.
The Salukis finished six strokes behind champion DePaul University in the 36-hole event.
Hosted by Butler University, the Butler Fall Golf Invitational was originally scheduled to be a 54-hole event but inclement weather Monday morning forced the tournament to be cut to 36 holes.
"I'm pleased with everybody, they all came back and did a great job today," said Saluki head coach Leroy Newton. "Everyone contributed and nobody gave up. The team worked hard and did a good job."
The Dawgs were in fourth, following Monday's first round, at 6-over-par 290. But, the team held tight and did not lose any ground, finishing with an even-par 284 in the final round.
McNemar is no stranger to being in the front of the pack as his 137 was good enough to tie for second. McNemar also finished second in the first tournament in the 2004-05 season, the Harris Fall Invitational.
"I was just keeping it in play today and my putting went well," said the senior from Culpeper, Va. "I'm a better player than I was last year, but this was a tough course."
Following McNemar was newcomer Mark Schmitz of St. Louis, finishing in a tie for eighth with a 2-over 144. Schmitz transferred to SIU from Southeast Missouri over the summer.
Andrew Gwinup (Mahomet, Ill.), Roger Welch (Benedict, Md.) and Daniel Tomlin (Mechanicsville, Va.) all tied for 35th to round out the Saluki effort. All three finished with 8-over-par 150s.
Junior Braxton Weaver competed as an individual in the event. He carded a 81-75--156 to finish tied for 64th.
"We can do better; we will be better," said Newton following the match. "We have a different type of green next week so we will be working on our putting and chipping. We also need to work on keeping the ball in play."
McNemar agreed with Newton, alluding to signs that the team will continue to improve.
"We could have been better this week, but its our first tournament. We have a good team, we'll be back."
The Salukis return to action Sept. 26 - 27 at the John Dallio Memorial at Prarie Landing G.C. in West Chicago, Ill. SIU will be entering familiar territory as the Dawgs won the title the past two years.
